The Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production of Lesvos

The Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production of Lesvos, a member of the PIOP Museum Network, is housed in the old communal olive press of Aghia Paraskevi on the island of Lesvos. Visitors can see the equipment of the oil press in action, and learn how the factory evolved from steam power to diesel engine operation.

The various stages of olive-oil production -crushing the olives, compressing the olive pulp and separating the olive oil from the water- are all shown in the main building of the Museum. The work cycle relating to the production of olive oil is presented in the old storage rooms for olives. The unique connection of the local people with the olive-oil production process is showcased in the permanent exhibition of the Museum; the communal oil press, known as "The People's Machine", was a pioneering venture in communal ownership. Young and older visitors will enjoy the educational workshops, experiments and multi-media applications.
